Sewing a button is a basic sewing skill that everyone can learn. Today I spent the day with my granddaughter, Caroline and we learned how to sew on buttons. Here are the supplies you will need:

Button(s) appropriate for the garment you are sewing

Needle (I recommend sharps)

Thread (my favorite is Gutermann)

Washable Marking Pen (do mark where you want to sew on the button)

Straight Pin

Scissors

Instructions:

Cut a length of thread about 18-20 inches and thread through your needle. Then pull the thread through until the ends are the same length and tie a knot. Place a small dot (mark) using a washable pen or chalk on the garment in the exact location to sew the button. Insert the threaded needle through the garment from the front so that the knot in the thread is hidden by the button. Sew with the thread going through the button hole and back down through the garment. If there are more than two holes in the button, just sew one set of two and then the next set in a row pattern or crisscrossed (whatever looks best to you). If you are using a button with a shank on the back, you will just go through the shank several times. After about 5-6 passes through the button, bring the thread to the backside of the garment and tie a knot.
